Swiss craftsmanship in Africa.

Stretch out your hand. Bend a couple of fingers out of sight and what you have left is approximately the number of family owned and operated firms still producing traditionally crafted furniture. One of them has been around for over four decades, Jo Carlin Design. Founded as a factory in which dedicated artisans could practice their time-honored skills without compromise, Jo Carlin Design established a unique reputation for creating individual pieces to suit individual needs. Today Jo Carlin Design maintains both its commitment to the finest hand craftsmanship, and its ability to customize each piece to the client’s personal specification. Run your eyes over a Jo Carlin Design piece and you see the difference. Run your hand over one and you feel it. More than the look of great tradition honed to a modern sensibility. The tradition itself.

Through collaboration with international acknowledged designers, we add a spice to our heritage, which we respect, but want to challenge. Our approach is heavily influenced by our experiments with natural materials and geometric forms, giving our work a nice sculptural touch. We strive to build objects that are not just comfortable to sit in, but also interesting to look at.

All of our products are made in the Jo Carlin Design plant located in Cape Town, South Africa. Our factory is vertically integrated, allowing us complete control over all aspects of our production from raw wood to final product. This gives us versatility to meet our client needs and delivery requirements. With detailed attention paid to woodworking processes and the exact tailoring that has become a hallmark of a Jo Carlin piece of furniture. We are proud to present our traditional and classic contemporary collections for your review.

In all of our manufacturing, Jo Carlin Design respects our environment. We understand the balance of supply afforded by select harvesting and have been using only Certified sources for decades.

We love the simplicity of pure nature and we have the utmost respect for the materials we work with. our objects will aim to celebrate the core values of each material to build upon the expressions that are given to us by nature.

Through experiments with forms, materials and function we will push the boundaries for what you can expect from a piece of design work. we will always strive to create interesting silhouettes at the intersection of art and design.

For us roughness is what brings honesty into the work we do. without being pretentious we aim to have arough expression in the elements we use and the objects we produce

We are rooted in a International design tradition where craft is a prerequisite. we respect our heritage, but we also want to use our skills to push the traditions and challenge them with new ways and new methods.
